Emma writes:
I recently found your site off a search engine, and I was wondering if you could help me find my style. See, I thought I was wearing clothes that reflected my personality?but I was wrong, I was wearing clothes that made me blend in with everyone else. I guess it is easy to do that when you are 17, but I would like to find my own style now, I don't know how to go about doing that. I know who I am and what I like, but I don't know how to match that with clothes, accessories, and makeup. I am a Taurus, english is my favourite subject, I am in many drama productions, I am a coach of a soccer team, and a teacher(s) helper at a local school. I am all over the place, so I don't really fit into one category. The only thing I know about my clothes is that I don't like to show a lot of my legs. If you could help me, that would be amazing.

Carla Mathis responds:
Well, with your lifestyle it sounds like you need clothes that are easy to care for, easy to wear, with nothing too fitted. Separates are probably better than one-pieces. T-shirts, with a good pair of khakis and jeans, and little jacket or sweater, or poncho, to throw over your shoulder would work great. Bring out your personality in the colors you wear. Use some color in the under shirt or tank top. Or put a khaki undershirt and pants, and then a little colored jacket. Make sure they fit easy, nothing too tight, and nothing too loose and sloppy.

Make sure you are using accessories. What kind of earrings do you like to wear? Make sure they are fun and funky and interesting and something your age group would find appealing. Probably not bracelets, because you are so busy in all these activities. Headbands are good of your hair is medium to long. Put your interesting spark in your accessories and a pop of color somewhere.

You will find your own style by paying attention to what makes you feel good when you wear it. Here is something you can do to identify your style. When you are feeling really good about yourself and you are having a good hair day, go into the stores and try on clothes. See what skirt styles fit. Does it need a little flare because you have thighs? Does it need to be straight because you have a high hip, that you have a little curve that goes under your waist? Maybe you don't have a waist so you don't need a waistband. What neckline do you like? Do you like colors better than plain necks? When you look in the mirror, you will know. If you don't, if you say ?Uhhhh, there is something wrong here, I don't like the way I look?, then it isn't the right cut for you. It isn't the right style. You will find it, you just have to pay attention and try a lot of clothes.

ACTION: Make notes and observe how you feel in each of the clothes. Bring a friend who can write down what works for you, or take a camera and take pictures so you have a record of styles that you feel great it.

So Emma, how much makeup do you wear? You are in drama. What part of drama? Are you on stage? So you know how important makeup is. So people can hear, feel like they are hearing what the characters are saying. Makeup in regular life is kind of the same, it's just not as heavy or extreme. You need a little makeup if you are going to get out in the world and show up. How much have you worn in the past? What make up looks do you like? Do you like the more natural look or the more dramatic, if you had the courage? Start looking at pictures, looking at people. Seeing what you really like the looks of. Let me know, and then we can sort of refine what is going to work for you.

ACTION: Start a binder of pictures of clothing styles you like. Take it to the stores with you. You don't have to wear designer labels. If you know the style you want, you can find the items almost anywhere.

The most important thing is to start paying attention to what your body wants to have on, because your body has a pattern, an identifiable shape that needs to have certain kinds of clothes. It's honoring that shape. Are you a triangular silhouette? Are your shoulders wider than your thighs? Do you have a waist, a tummy, a tush? All that is important in knowing what styles are going to work and make you shine. So, let me know, tell me.

Start a folder of pictures you like from magazines and catalogs and take it with you when you shop so you can find pieces that you love?and make you feel great.

All the best.
Carla
